Reining European Championships
Great Britain’s reiners were unlucky to miss out on a team medal after finishing an impressive fourth in the team event at the FEI European Championships in Aachen, Germany today (14 August). The team of Shane Borland, Francesca Sternberg and Doug Allen produced sterling performances to finish on a final team score of 635.000; Italy took the Gold, with Germany securing Silver and The Netherlands the Bronze.
Shane Borland was first into the Deutsche Bank Stadium for GBR with Lester Wilson’s Shiners Lena Oak. With some good work in the arena, which saw 69’s awarded, Shane secured a total score of 207.00 to get the team off to a good start.
Second out for the British reining team was Francesca Sternberg and the The Propane Company Ltd’s Ten Reasons, who performed a superb test to come away with a great score of 215.5. The seven year old stallion kicked off with a strong set of 360 degree turns just overstepping slightly on the second turn; but fast, controlled and accurate circles made up for the early mistake and the combination were rewarded for it in their marks. A big final sliding stop impressed the judges to gain positive scores and secure them a top ten finish, which sees them progress to Sunday’s Individual Final.
Doug Allen was the final Brit to go, aboard Hangten Shiner, owned by Christine Brazeau; with the crowd getting behind him the pair produced a great test for a score of 212.50, to finish the first Individual qualifying competition in joint sixteenth place. Doug and Shane will now both ride in tomorrow’s second Individual qualifying round, as where they will be looking to cement their places in Sunday’s final.
Francesca commented; “I’m really pleased with today, particularly as he’s normally ridden by Doug. I knew I could do a plus one on that spin but he went so quick he got a penalty mark which was a real shame.”
