With under sixty days to go until the start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the British Equestrian Federation would like to extend its thanks to the members of the Horse Trials Support Group who have raised over £30,000 to support the British Eventing team at this year’s Games. The funding will be used to cover the cost of sending a reserve Eventing horse out to Rio.
A long-standing supporter of the GBR Eventing teams at youth and senior level, the support of the Group in 2016 will be critical with the backing of a reserve combination vital should they be called upon.
BEF World Class Performance Director Dan Hughes commented; “The additional support provided to the British Eventing team from the Horse Trials Support Group will ensure that we have the very best chance of producing great performances in Rio and achieving medal success on the biggest stage of all. We are incredibly grateful to the fundraising efforts of Rosemary Barlow and members of the Horse Trials Support Group for the support they have given to the British teams this and in previous years.”
The Horse Trials Support Group announced the winner of their Olympic prize draw recently at Badminton Horse Trials, with long-time member Margaret Steinschaden-Silver winning an all-expenses paid trip to Rio for her and a companion. The pair, who will fly out with the Eventing horse owners, will reside in Barra and receive tickets to all sessions of the Eventing competition in Deodoro.
Rosemary Barlow, Chairman of the Horse Trials Support Group commented; “Since the Group was founded in 1978, its purpose has been to offer support to the British Eventing teams and are delighted to support the Eventing team once again in their bid for Olympic medals. As my last term as Chairman, it has been a great pleasure to help raise funds for the reserve Eventing horse at this year’s Games through our membership and at the Countryside Race Day.”
The funds raised for the Eventing team via the Support Group, forms part of a wider fundraising effort led by Rosemary Barlow which saw over £50,000 raised for the GBR Equestrian teams at last years’ Countryside Race Day at Cheltenham, organised by the Countryside Alliance and the Cheltenham Race Day Committee. The funds raised at Cheltenham have supported equestrian athletes across Dressage, Jumping, Eventing and Para-Dressage, as they prepare for this summer’s Games.
Dan added; “We are hugely indebted to the generosity of the British public in helping to support our Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian teams this year. The money raised at Cheltenham for The Countryside Alliance Foundation and the British Equestrian teams is truly astonishing and I would like to thank everyone for their support, not only on the day itself, but throughout the year. I would also like to make special mention of Rosemary Barlow and her tireless efforts to fundraise on behalf of British equestrianism.
“The teams are now gearing up for what will be an exhilarating summer of sport in Rio and this support has further enabled our British athletes and horses to have the best possible preparation ahead of the Games.”
