Equestrian Team GBR, in partnership with the British Equestrian Federation Fund, received overwhelming support at this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. While the full total is not yet known, early indications are that a substantial amount has been raised to see Team GBR on their way to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014.
Staff, athletes, official team suppliers and volunteers came together to make the Badminton Horse Trials fundraising effort a hugely successful one. The prestigious four star event played host to five days of activities which included a silent auction, raffle, fundraising dinner and the sale of limited edition merchandise. The British Equestrian Federation’s Olympic legacy programme, Hoof, was also present to lend a hand with the Team GBR fundraising, providing rides to over 450 people on their mechanical horse Henry.
The money raised will go towards supporting the large GB support team required to assist in the preparations for WEG, ensuring support staff, such as physiotherapists and vets, are available to help GB deliver on the world stage. Along with enabling Team GBR to employ and accommodate these extra performance enhancing support staff, funds will also help to underpin some of the set costs, including ferry crossings, entry fees and fuel.
Chief Executive of the British Equestrian Federation, Andrew Finding, summarised the amazing support felt by the whole of Equestrian Team GBR; “I am thrilled that so many members of staff and supporters of the entire Federation pulled together at Badminton to raise the additional and much needed funds to support the athletes of all disciplines, travelling as a single consolidated Equestrian Team GBR operation to the World Equestrian Games in Normandy.
“While we are wonderfully supported by UK Sport and the National Lottery the athletes from Driving, Endurance, Reining and Vaulting, all vital to our cause, do not enjoy this direct input. Money raised will do so much to support them as well as the entire team. The great British equestrian community in buying wrist bands, pin badges and making bids for auction prizes have shown wonderful support for Equestrian Team GBR; we thank them as we thank Hugh Thomas, Director of the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, and his team for making this outstanding display of togetherness a possibility.”
A team of over 40 athletes are expected to represent Equestrian Team GBR at the 2014 World Equestrian Games, from the Olympic disciplines of Dressage, Eventing, Showjumping and Para-Equestrian Dressage, and Non-Olympic Disciplines of Driving, Reining, Endurance and Vaulting.
On behalf of everyone who will benefit from the funding received, we would like to thank the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials in making Equestrian Team GBR in partnership with BEFF the official beneficiary of 2014, our official suppliers and the generous contributors of prizes and merchandise, along with everyone who kindly donated towards being a part of getting Equestrian Team GBR to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014.
Congratulations to the lucky winners of the Grand Team GBR raffle, and to Alison Gwilliam who won first prize - an exclusive trip for two to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy from 1 – 7 September 2014.
