Background
Despite having a non-horsey family, Mary started riding the local vicar’s pony at the age of 6, when her father (a retired naval officer) became a verger. Inspired by a visit to Badminton Horse Trials, Mary worked tirelessly on a butcher’s delivery round and as a gardener, cook and chalet girl – anything to fund her eventing career. She then became head girl to Sheila Wilcox, a former European Champion and Badminton winner, before launching her solo career. Mary is married to David and is also a mother of two, Emily (who represented Great Britain on the Eventing Junior squad in 2011) and Freddie.
Her glittering career has brought medals at both World and European Championship level and the title of British Champion a record four times. She has represented Britain at the last five Olympic Games taking team bronze in 2008 and team silver in 2004.
