Budding Volunteers sign up at #Blair2015

23rd Sep 2015

The recent Longines FEI European Eventing Championship at Blair Castle in Perthshire was a spectacular show-case of the sport as well as a wonderful opportunity for spectators to see first-hand how vital volunteers are to the running of an event.

As part of the legacy of the first ever senior Europeans to hit Scottish soil, British Eventing and HorseScotland worked together to run a campaign for prospective Volunteers to sign up to the sport throughout the event.

As an incentive to sign up to the BE Volunteer database, those who signed up automatically entered a competition to win ‘The Ultimate Volunteer Package’ supported by The Mark Todd Collection with a top prize for one winner plus runner up gifts for the top ten.

Over 500 people signed up on both the BE Stand (including the BE Cross Country tent – pictured) and the HorseScotland stand throughout Blair2015.

Douglas Edward, Chair of the BE Scotland Committee said of the success of the initiative: “It was great to see how many people wanted to find out about volunteering that had never done it before or weren’t sure how to go about it. Giving people the opportunity to meet someone from BE or HorseScotland who could talk them through the benefits of volunteering seems to have had a really encouraging effect.”

The winner of ‘The Ultimate Volunteer Package’ was Carole Neslen who made the trek to Blair from Somerset to support the host nation. She receives a pair of Mark Todd Country boots, BE Supporter membership and BE merchandise. She commented: “ I used to volunteer as a steward a long time ago at a local event before I had the kids, so when some lovely girls approached me at Blair about volunteering again I thought why not give it a go. Winning the prize package was a lucky bonus – I didn’t really know that was a part of the sign up process so I am very much looking forward to receiving the boots and the Membership pack.”

The runners up, who all won vital kit to stay warm whilst volunteering including gloves, head band and neck tube from The Mark Todd Collection were:

  • Susan Scott
  • Sally Oakden
  • Joyce Ramsay
  • Wendy Muir
  • Tammy Halsey
  • Elizabeth Bray
  • Jeff Furner
  • Kerry Balment
  • Luke Bell
  • Alana Rothwell
