It went right down to the wire on the final day at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, with just 0.1 penalties separating the winner and runner-up.
Sixteen years after her last Burghley victory, it was Pippa Funnell who lifted the Burghley trophy yesterday. She was riding Jonathan and Jane Clarke's MGH Grafton Street, who was contesting his first CCI5*. Pippa had maintained her lead from the dressage phase, adding only few time penalties on cross-country day and a single pole in the showjumping to finish on a score of 30.8.
Agonisingly close behind Pippa in second place were Piggy French and her Badminton-winning horse Vanir Kamira. The only pair to go clear inside the time around the cross-country course, they too had a pole down in the showjumping, allowing Pippa a slim margin for error that proved necessary. They finished on a score of 30.9.
Oliver Townend finished third with Ballaghmor Class, giving the horse his fifth top-five finish in his first five CCI5* runs – only the third time this feat has been achieved since 2008. Another one to have a pole down in the showjumping, they ended their Burghley run on a score of 31.3.
