After flying through the first horse inspection yesterday, the British dressage team are off to a strong start in Rotterdam for the FEI Dressage European Championships.
Lottie Fry and Dark Legend were first into the Rotterdam Arena for what was their senior championship debut. Despite Dark Legend baulking at his first glimpse of the arena and needing to be led in by groom Claire James, the pair produced a poised, polished test that belied their youth and inexperience. This earned them a final score of 74.31% and slotted them into second place at the end of the first rotation of riders.
Lottie may have thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of her team, but Gareth Hughes and Classic Briolinca weren't going to let that phase them. The crowd waited on bated breath as they flowed from movement to movement, eventually finished on 76.35%. Not only was this a personal best for the combination, but it secured them third place and put Team GBR in silver medal position overnight.
Carl Hester and Hawtins Delicato will compete at 10:00 BST tomorrow (Tuesday 20 August), followed by Charlotte Dujardin and Mount St John Freestyle at 13:50 BST.
