Ben Maher on explosive form in London GCT

Ben Maher and Explosion W, who will be representing Team GBR at the FEI Jumping European Championships in Rotterdam this summer, scored an emphatic victory at the London Leg of the Global Championship Tour this weekend. Luhmühlen

“The best win is to win at home,” said a delighted Ben, who was quick to praise his mount. “To ride probably the best horse in the world is an incredible feeling. Explosion and I started a little slower this year and he’s had two GCT seconds, but I took all of the risks today. He felt incredible and deserved this win.”

New British National Champion crowned at Gatcombe

There was plenty to celebrate at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park, with great results from a number of British riders.

After finishing as runners-up behind Kiwi Jonelle Price and Classic Moet in the British Open Championship CCI4*-S, Ben Hobday and Shadow Man found themselves crowned British National Champions.

“I could hear that a few riders had had run-outs and that took the pressure off me,” explained Ben, who incurred 11.6 time penalties. “He’s a fantastic horse and does everything I ask of him.”

Ride Around the World Day

Also taking place at the Festival of Eventing was the Pony Club’s Ride Around the World Day parade on Saturday 3 August, which was organised as part of the organisation’s 90th birthday celebrations. Representatives from 29 Pony Club branches took part at the parade, with Princess Anne and her daughter, eventer Zara Tindell, in attendance.

Pony Club members past and present from across the world could also enjoy Ride Around the World Day by sharing their connection to the Pony Club and what it means to them. Thousands took part, including those from as far afield as Australia, Canada, South Africe, Turkey and the USA.
