Team GBR came to the European Championships with one primary goal – to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. To do so would require them to finish in the top three of the nations not yet qualified, with Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland and Denmark also vying for a place. The team went into the final round of the team competition in bronze medal position following strong performances the day before.
Running in the same order as the previous day, first into the ring were Ben Maher and Explosion W. They pulled off another stylish clear round that set the team off to a great start. A lost shoe delayed Holly Smith and Hearts Destiny's entrance to the Rotterdam Arena, but they breezed round with just one unlucky pole to add to the tally. Amanda Derbyshire and Luibanta BH followed and, despite them adding four penalties, the combined score of the three riders was good enough for Tokyo qualification and a bronze medal. With these secured, Scott Brash could afford the eight faults that he and Hello M'Lady picked up in an otherwise great round.
Ben Maher maintains his spot at the top of the individual rankings with Explosion W thanks to his clear round. The individual final will be start at 1pm on Sunday and, with less than a pole between Ben, Belgium's Jos Verlooy and Switzerland's' Martin Fuchs, the battle for the gold medal is far from over.
